Hi, I’m Sarah Lock, I’m an artist and illustrator. I recently graduated from Cambridge School of Art with an MA in Children’s Book Illustration.

I live on the South Coast of England in a little village by the sea with my husband and two dogs. We are really blessed to live in such a lovely place and have the privilege of being able to enjoy the countryside and the beaches nearby. It is quite a contrast from the area where I grew up, in North London, which I am also very thankful for, as it has helped make me the person I am today. Both experiences give me endless inspiration for my illustration work.

I am also fascinated by people and animals, and draw inspiration from them. I love drawing from real life and I like my illustrations to be based on reality, so observational drawing is a must for me. I like to capture character and emotion. Pre-covid, you could often find me in a café with a cup of tea and a slice of cake, sketching people around me.

I like to create books that are issue-based, but I also like making fun stories. Through my illustration work I want to help children to cope better with different circumstances in life, as well as entertain them, surprise them and make them laugh.

My work usually includes textures and bold shapes; interesting characters and emotions. I really enjoy mark-making, printmaking and drawing or painting with inks, as well as making it all come together digitally. I also like to make my own typefaces.

I have created a few dummy books for younger children and I am now working on an idea for a graphic novel hybrid . I am also exploring some ideas for older children's illustrations and atmospheric work.

If you would like to work with me, please get in touch by email.
